SEJARAH

The existence of the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA Unnes is inseparable from the history of Unnes (previously named IKIP Negeri Semarang), which began with PP No. 7/1961 regarding the formation of Diponegoro University starting on October 15, 1960. One of the faculties is FKIP in Semarang and its branches are in Surakarta.

In 1962, the Minister of Education and Culture established a new Teacher Education Institute, namely the Teacher Education Institute (IPG) with the same functions and objectives as FKIP. To avoid dualism in teacher education at the university level, based on Presidential Decree No.1/1963 dated January 3, 1963, FKIP and IPG were changed to IKIP which were equivalent to universities within the PTIP Department. The Presidential Decree was then implemented by the Minister of PTIP by establishing IKIP through Decree of the Minister of PTIP No. 55/1963 dated May 22, 1963 as a follow-up to the issuance of the Joint Decree of the Minister of PTIP and the Minister of PD & K No. 32/1963 dated May 4, 1963 concerning the unification of FKIP and IPG in Jakarta, Bandung, Malang and Yogyakarta into IKIP.

With the merger with IPG to become IKIP, while FKIP UNDIP and FKIP UNDIP Surakarta branch were deemed unable to stand alone, then through PTIP Ministerial Decree No. IKIP Yogyakarta branch of Surakarta.

With the issuance of the Decree of the Minister of PTIP No. 36/1964 dated May 4, 1964 regarding the integration of the Faculty of Education (FIP) into the IKIP, the Yogyakarta branch of IKIP Semarang consists of the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Social Sciences Teacher Training, the Faculty of Literature and Arts Teacher Training and the Exact Science Teacher Training Faculty in accordance with the Decree of the Minister PTIP No. 154/1964 dated November 7, 1964.

The development of teacher education institutions at the tertiary level in Semarang, namely since the BI and B-II Courses were held until the inauguration of the Yogyakarta branch of IKIP Semarang developed very rapidly. Based on the consideration that the Semarang branch of IKIP Yogyakarta will develop faster in the future, but has not yet reached the age of one year, while waiting for the Presidential Decree, the Minister of PTIP established the Semarang IKIP as a separate institution on March 30, 1965 through PTIP Ministerial Decree No.40/1965 dated 8 March 1965. At that time it was determined that the IKIP Semarang consisted of the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Literature and Arts Teacher Training, the Social Sciences Teacher Training Faculty, the Exact Science Teacher Training Faculty and the Engineering Teacher Training Faculty. The Presidential Decree which ratified the establishment of IKIP Semarang on March 30, 1965 was issued on September 14, 1965 with No. 271 in 1965. Starting in 1965, the Teaching Faculty of Exact Sciences (FKIE) has 4 departments, namely the Department of Exact Sciences, the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Natural Sciences and the Department of Life Sciences.

In 1982 based on Presidential Decree No. 52/1982 the name of FKIE was changed to the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Education (FPMIPA) with majors in Mathematics Education, Chemistry Education, Physics Education and Biology Education.

In 1999 based on Presidential Decree No.24/1999 concerning the change of IKIP Semarang, Bandung and Medan into universities, the State University of Semarang (Unnes) was established as a change from IKIP Semarang which was inaugurated by the Minister of National Education on January 27, 2000. Based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 278/O/1999 concerning the Organization and Work Procedure of the State University of Semarang, the name of FPMIPA was also changed to FMIPA with the majors in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

The next development with the existence of a  wider mandate  , FMIPA not only manages educational study programs that educate prospective teachers but also opens non-educational study programs. Likewise with the Department of Chemistry, since 1999 it has been educating not only prospective education graduates but also Chemistry graduates.

Briefly, the establishment of the Department of Chemistry, FMIPA Unnes, started from:
